Safety & Security
In general, Rooiels is a very safe and secure place. There is very little crime overall – largely due to our security association RESA and the vigilance and dedication of the community. We have experienced occasional spikes in break-ins and home invasions over the years, but a co-ordinated and proactive approach has stood the village in good stead. If you’re from the city or the suburbs, you will certainly feel the difference here.
Safety-wise, incidents tend to be related to natural hazards like currents, sea conditions or extreme weather.
Rooiels Security Association (RESA)
RESA is a community-organised and funded organisation which manages the village’s CCTV cameras and monitoring, co-ordinates volunteer patrols and liaises with our security service provider. It also runs the Rooiels Block Watch WhatsApp group, which alerts patrollers and residents to security incidents.

Fidelity ADT
Fidelity ADT provides 24/7 security services for Rooiels. As well as responding to alarm activations and calls from residents, feeds from our CCTV cameras are monitored remotely and any suspicious movement is flagged to the response vehicle based in the village.
Poaching
- Log a report on the Kogelberg C.A.R.E app (download it below).
- Post on the Block Watch WhatsApp group so your neighbours are aware.
- Report it on WhatsApp 083 236 2926 with a pin location and a description of what you saw.
Safety
Sadly, most years there are a number of drownings or near-drownings on our coastline. The Rooiels Medics provide invaluable help as first responders and support to emergency services.
We have also had a number of occasions where hikers or climbers have become stranded on the trails or mountains, and have been recovered by courageous residents alongside rescue services.
And we also witness boats and watersports enthusiasts running into trouble a few times a year. Again, Rooielsers rise to the occasion, reporting, tracking and assisting the NSRI to help people in trouble.
Over and above individual incidents, wildfires are a threat to the safety of all in the village. Through responsible behaviour, reporting illegal or dangerous incidents, and responding immediately, Rooielsers are proactive in keeping everyone in the village safe.
Community Vigilance
Rooielsers’ care and commitment is essential to our collective safety and security through:
- Diligently using alarm systems.
- Volunteering to patrol the village.
- Being watchful and reporting incidents or suspicions through the correct channels.
- Physically helping out when it’s safe and appropriate.
