iNaturalist

iNaturalist is an app that makes it easy to identify and record the species you see around Rooiels. More than that, every observation you upload adds to one of the world’s largest biodiversity databases, used by scientists, conservationists and land managers.

These records aren’t just interesting – they build a long-term ecological picture that has helped track the spread of invasive species, rediscovered lost plants, identified migration patterns, and highlighted endangered species in need of protection. In fact, several peer-reviewed scientific papers now cite iNaturalist data as a key source.

So why use it?

  • You’ll learn more about what’s growing or living around you.

  • You’ll be contributing to real conservation science.

  • You’ll help build Rooiels’ ecological memory – a lasting record of species that future generations can learn from.

When you snap a photo of something wild and upload it, the app suggests a likely ID, and the community will help confirm it.

The more Rooiels residents and visitors who use the app, the richer our collective knowledge of the biodiversity around us will be.
