Walking and hiking around Rooiels is a chance to explore dramatic coastal scenery, fynbos slopes and quiet mountain paths. Routes vary from short coastal strolls to longer paths between villages. 

🌊 RooiEls Coast Walk

An informal but popular coastal route skirts the shoreline around Rooiels, offering sweeping views over False Bay and a close-to-nature experience. Many walkers describe it as a moderate coastal walk with rocky and uneven sections underfoot, so sturdy shoes and care with footing are recommended. This route is best enjoyed in mild conditions and is a favourite for a peaceful seaside walk.

🥾 Pringle Bay ↔ Rooiels Path

For a longer outing, a trail connecting Pringle Bay and Rooiels is suitable for an out-and-back walk of around 9 kilometres, taking approximately 2 to 2.5 hours at a gentle pace. This coastal path has open views, and walkers often see wildflowers and birds along the way. This route is moderate and can be done in either direction, but it has little shade, so sun protection and water are essential.

🏘️ Local Village Walks

Within the village, quiet lanes and informal paths allow for shorter strolls through Rooiels and along low dunes, shoreline or rockpools. These are ideal for a casual walk while enjoying sea views, birdlife and the village ambience. Please keep to the paths!

⛰️ Kogelberg Trails

Beyond Rooiels, the wider Kogelberg Nature Reserve offers more demanding day hikes and multi-day trails. These routes vary in difficulty and many require permits from CapeNature. If you’re interested in exploring further afield, it’s best to check current access conditions, permit requirements and trail details directly with CapeNature before setting out.

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes. Many paths are rocky, uneven or slippery.
  • Check weather and wind conditions before you head out. 
  • Bring sun protection, water and a mobile phone.
  • Mobile signal can be spotty or absent, so let someone know your route and expected return time.
  • Walk within your limits.
  • Some hikes require permits from CapeNature.

If you don’t have visible food, they won’t be interested in you. Stay calm and treat them with respect.

Please park in a designated space on Anemone Road, near the shop and restaurants.

Use only public roads and designated paths to minimise disturbance to wildlife and vegetation.

🚮 Don’t Litter

Please put your rubbish in the baboon proof bins provided, or even better, take it home with you.
