Birds

Rooiels supports a remarkable array of bird diversity within a very small area. including endemic fynbos specialists like the Cape Rockjumper, Cape Sugarbird and Orange-breasted and Double-collared Sunbird. Raptors occasionally seen overhead include the African Fish Eagle and the Peregrine FalconThe estuary supports species such as the Malachite Kingfisher, Grey Heron and the African Black Oystercatcher. And along the coast, seabirds include the Cape Cormorant and Swift Tern. Few places offer mountain fynbos, estuary, and rocky shoreline within walking distance of one another. This habitat mosaic supports three distinct bird communities  – a rare ecological concentration in such a small footprint

Some of these species are under threat. The Cape Rockjumper occurs only in the fynbos mountains of the Western Cape, including those surrounding Rooiels. Because it depends on cool, high-altitude habitat, it is particularly vulnerable to climate warming. The African Black Oystercatcher, once near-threatened due to coastal disturbance, depends on undisturbed shorelines for breeding. Here in Rooiels, we try our best to protect nests, eggs and chicks, but it only takes one storm, unleashed dog or careless walker to destroy the parents’ breeding chances for the year.

Birds are essential indicators of healthy ecosystems. Populations here face growing pressures: habitat loss, climate change, disturbance during breeding, predation, coastal development, pollution, and declining marine fish stocks. Protecting bird habitat in Rooiels safeguards the ecological systems that sustain the entire landscape.

🙋 How you can help
