Swim

To swim in Rooiels is to experience the raw Atlantic in all its splendour – clean water and dramatic scenery in an unspoilt setting. However, the sea must always be approached with care. Remember, there are no lifeguards at any of the swimming spots in the village, so swimming in Rooiels is always at your own risk. Carefully consider prevailing weather, wind and water conditions before you enter the sea.

Where to swim in Rooiels

ย

๐Ÿ–๏ธSandy Beaches

  • The main beach
  • The slipway (just west of the main beach)

These areas are good for casual swimming close to the shoreline. A good starting point for hobby swimmers and first-time visitors to Rooiels. Adding a snorkel and diving glasses allows you to experience the richness and beauty of the underwater marine life.

๐ŸšRock Pools & Rocky Areas

  • Ottergat
  • The Cove
  • Container Bay

This option suits those interested in observing the rock and kelp ecosystems along the coastline. Swimming or snorkelling in these areas requires confidence, as you’ll move through narrow spaces near rocks while waves surge in and out. A wetsuit and swim fins may be helpful.

Rooiels International SwemKlub (RISK)ย

RISK is an informal group of residents who are passionate sea swimmers, with its own WhatsApp group. When conditions allow, the group gathers for a swim which starts at the slipway at high tide. Suitable for advanced swimmers only, the route is approximately 500 metres and partially passes through kelp – a new experience for some, and a worthwhile one.

Swimmers should be confident swimming for about 15 minutes without touching land. Water conditions can be fresh and rough depending on wind, which is part of what RISK’s swimmers enjoy. Only very experienced swimmers should attempt this route alone.

On occasion, a longer swim is organised. It takes a similar but longer route. Swimmers should be confident swimming for approximately 30 minutes without touching land and able to tolerate cold water (or wear appropriate protective gear).

โš ๏ธ Safety

Swimming in the Atlantic requires respect for the power and nature of the sea.

Always:

  • Check weather and wind conditions before you head out.

  • Be aware of changing sea state.

  • Consider local knowledge and advice from experienced residents.

Seasonal phenomena such as red tides, blue bottles and jellyfish can occur and may cause skin irritation or more serious reactions.

Wind conditions in Rooiels are highly localised and can change quickly. Strong offshore winds and unexpected winter swells present particular hazards. Always err on the side of caution.
