Insects & Arachnids

A variety of insects and arachnids make their homes in Rooiels. Most go unnoticed, but a handful are distinctive or commonly encountered around gardens and natural vegetation.

Spiders

We certainly have lots of spiders, both indoors and outdoors. Some of the most striking species are:

  • Common Black Baboon Spiders
A robust ground‑dwelling spider. It is not aggressive and tends to retreat when disturbed, though its size may take you aback.
  • Rain and Hunting Spiders
Several large hunting spiders are observed in Rooiels’ fynbos gardens and homes. These active hunters do not build webs but chase or ambush prey at night.

Although both are venomous, they don’t pose any serious threat to humans.

Scorpions

The most common is the Cape Docile Scorpion, which is  secretive and shelters under rocks or low vegetation. Its venom is mild, and not dangerous to humans, although a sting could cause some pain and redness. If you find one indoors, it tends to freeze when uncovered. Cover it with a cup, slide a piece of paper underneath and put it outside.

Other Insects

Various butterfly species from families such as Papilionidae and Nymphalidae have been observed locally. These colourful pollinators are active by day and visit a range of fynbos flowers.  Beetles are common in Rooiels’ fynbos and play key roles in decomposing vegetation and recycling nutrients. Plant‑feeding insects like leafhoppers and shield bugs occur on shrubs and grasses, and although small, they contribute to insect food webs and plant dynamics. Dragonflies and damselflies rely on clean water, making them good indicators of ecological health.

Together these creatures play a vital role in the ecosystem – pollinating plants, regulating populations of smaller invertebrates, recycling nutrients and providing food for birds, reptiles and small mammals.

🙋 How you can help

  • Turn off your lights at night – essential for insect migration and breeding cycles.

  • Don’t allow your pets to chase and kill insects.

  • Don’t use poisons and insecticides in your home or garden.

  • Don’t kill insects and arachnids – gently relocate them to a sheltered outdoor spot.
